From Boardrooms to Bus Rides: Our Human Rights Adventure in Geneva

After finishing our exams, what better way to recharge than an inspiring trip to Geneva? Thanks to FAU’s generous support in sponsoring our accommodation, most of us from the FAU M.A. Human Rights program packed our bags and embarked on an unforgettable journey filled with learning, bonding, reflection, and some unexpected travel adventures!

My dear FAU awardees and friends

Our journey began in Nürnberg, where we boarded a train to Geneva. While my fellow classmates from Erlangen were in another carriage, I shared my ride with Ana. This made for a fun and cozy start to the trip—our own little travel bubble where we chatted, shared snacks, and enjoyed the smooth ride through stunning landscapes. The train was comfortable, allowing us to relax before diving into the busy schedule ahead.

Geneva, the heart of international diplomacy, welcomed us with open arms and high-level meetings! We had the privilege of engaging with professionals working at the UN, leading NGOs, and influential think tanks, gaining firsthand insights into the world we aspire to be part of. These conversations were invaluable—not just for painting a clearer picture of the challenges and opportunities in the field but also for reminding us why we chose this path in the first place. For me, it was a moment of clarity: an opportunity to reconnect with my purpose and see how my past experiences are paving the way for my next career step.

Beyond the professional experience, we enjoyed our fair share of fun! Whether it was cooking together in the evenings, taking a relaxing cruise along the Rhône River, or visiting the International Red Cross Museum, every moment felt special.

Discovering Geneva!

Then came the return journey. Oh, the bus ride back to Nürnberg—what an experience! If the train ride was all about comfort and ease, the bus journey was the complete opposite: long, cramped, and not-so-glamorous. It tested our patience but somehow became one of the funniest parts of the trip. Sleep was nearly impossible, legroom was a myth, and time seemed to stretch forever. Despite the discomfort, we made the best of it—laughing at our situation, sharing stories, and turning what could have been a nightmare into a cherished memory. By the time we reached Nürnberg, we were exhausted, slightly sore, but still smiling.

This trip wasn’t just about professional growth; it was about camaraderie, shared experiences, and strengthening the bonds that will carry us through our studies and beyond. I’m incredibly grateful for FAU’s support in making this happen, and I can’t wait to continue learning—both in and out of the classroom—with such an inspiring group of colleagues and friends.

Here’s to more adventures, more learning, and the endless pursuit of human rights!
